Veronica Roth sat down with Harper Teen to talk about ALLEGIANT, the characters that have surprised her the most (including the one who refused to die!), and visiting the DIVERGENT movie set!
Divergent cast members Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer, Ben Lamb, Ansel Elgort, Zoe Kravitz, Amy Newbold, Zoe Kravitz, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Miles Teller, and Christian Madsen all posed for Entertainment Weekly‘s beloved Comic Con portraits. Check them out!
Here are a couple of cute pictures of the Divergent cast out and about. One picture was taken at a Chicago Bulls game. Not sure where the other was taken.
We have three new additions to the cast of the Divergent movie, which was announced on the Divergent Facebook page! You may not know who these guys are now, but no doubt you will as we endeavor to give you as much information on the filming and people involved.
Christian Madsen “Al”
Not that I’m actually complaining, but Christian Madsen is certainly a lot more handsome than I’d imagined Al to be. This 23-year-old actor is still fairly new to Hollywood, however, he is the son of actor Michael Madsen, and has been in a handful of films with his dad. His part as Al will probably be his biggest role to date.
Ben Lamb “Edward”
Ben Lloyd-Hughes “Will”
Another British actor, 24-year-old Ben Lloyd-Hughes has been on several UK TV shows, including Skins, Personal Affairs, and Young James Herriott. He comes from a family of actors, including his brother Henry Lloyd-Hughes, who had a part in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Obviously, you can see that the actors cast are several years older than the characters they will be playing. Considering the depth of maturity the characters are in the books, it makes sense that they would want to find actors that are able to convey the emotion and attitude correctly, and sometimes that means hiring older. However, it’s not surprise that older actors are cast for such parts. I shouldn’t be, but I am rather a bit surprised at how good looking the cast seems to be so far. It would be interesting to see them give the characters the proper attitude they are meant to have.
When it comes to Shailene Woodley taking on the role of Tris Prior in the Divergent films, there have been many skeptics in the fandom, despite Veronica Roth herself giving her approval. Members of any fandom can be harsh and quick to judge (think backlash from Harry Potter and Hunger Games casting), so Entertainment Weekly has given fans five reasons to be optimistic about Shailene Woodley in the coveted role!
1. Woodley was one of the contenders to play Katniss in The Hunger Games: The role ultimately went to Jennifer Lawrence, of course, and Woodley has since admitted that the other actress was the right choice. She told MTV in March: “Yeah, I definitely auditioned. It wasn’t, like, a great audition. But I think that Jennifer Lawrence is perfect for that role.” Why is this a good thing? It means she’s familiar with the kind of audience Divergent will attract and that she’s prepared to take on the responsibility of playing a character that could draw lot of attention — media and otherwise.
2. She’s got cred as an actress: Okay, I know a lot of people will be scandalized by the fact that their potential Tris was also the star of The Secret Life of the American Teenager. But have you seen The Descendants? Woodley delivers a powerful performance as a drinking, cursing teen seething with resentment for her father. Imagine how hard it is to act as though you dislike George Clooney. The girl should have gotten an Oscar for that alone. Plus, she comes with a stamp of approval from Clooney himself: “She really elevates that role from a stereotype. You can write and direct it. But at the end of the day, someone has to play it.”
3. She’s committed to her TV show: Say what you will about Woodley or The Secret Life of the American Teenager, but even in the midst of all the hubbub surrounding The Descendants, Woodley stayed firmly committed to the ABC Family series for another two seasons. It has since been cancelled, but Woodley never made the move to ditch it herself in favor of her burgeoning film career. She respects her work, regardless of what anyone says. That’s who I want to see sign on to a franchise that has such lasting potential: someone who will stick with it through the end (which you know is going to be four movies) even if she gets higher profile offers. (There’s rumors E L James wants her for Fifty Shades of Grey…)

Summit Entertainment has confirmed that Shailene Woodley, who is best known for starring in The Secret Life of the American Teenager and her Golden Globe nominated role in The Descendants, is in final negotiations for the role of Tris Prior in Divergent! The rumor popped up just last night.
Shailene Woodley has just finished filming The Spectacular Now and will sink her teeth into Gregg Araki’s White Bird before taking on Divergent. Looks like that rumor of an early 2013 start for filming is right on track!
Time to get your fan vote on, and pick all of the fan favorites for the future movie!
We here at the Divergent fandom thought that a great way to get more traffic onto the site, and bring more fans together would be to start a weekly casting call. We will post a poll every Thursday, and give all of the fans a week to get their vote on! But first thing’s first…
We want to work our way up to the central characters.. so we thought it would be fun to throw out a few popular support characters! Tell us what you think, and remember, the poll will be open all week!
