Today Summit Entertainment announced that due to scheduling issues, director Neil Burger will not be able to direct Divergent sequel, Insurgent. See below for the official statement.
“Neil Burger is a rock star and he is doing a fantastic job on Divergent. We can’t wait for you to see the film. But as amazing as Neil is he still cannot be in two places at once and thus needs to finish post production on Divergent while we gear up to start production on Insurgent. So, although Neil will continue on as part of our Divergent family as an executive producer, we sadly have to find another director for the next chapter in Veronica Roth’s fantastic series.”

Deadline is reporting that the plans to adapt Insurgent into a movie are moving forward with Brian Duffield being tapped to write the script.
Summit Entertainmentis certainly bullish on its adaptation of the Veronica Roth bestselling seriesDivergent. It not only has assigned the film the March 21, 2014 slot that got The Hunger Games off to a flying start, but it has officially gotten underway on the sequel. Summit has just set Brian Duffield to script the sequel,Insurgent, which Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher will produce the film via their Red Wagon Entertainment banner along with Pouya Shahbazian.
While we don’t know much about Duffield, this move to start working on the sequel while Divergent is still in production is indicative of how much confidence there is behind this franchise.
