Scheduling Issues Prevent Neil Burger from Directing Insurgent

Today Summit Entertainment announced that due to scheduling issues, director Neil Burger will not be able to direct Divergent sequel, Insurgent.  See below for the official statement.

DIVERGENT

“Neil Burger is a rock star and he is doing a fantastic job on Divergent.  We can’t wait for you to see the film.  But as amazing as Neil is he still cannot be in two places at once and thus needs to finish post production on Divergent while we gear up to start production on Insurgent.  So, although Neil will continue on as part of our Divergent family as an executive producer, we sadly have to find another director for the next chapter in Veronica Roth’s fantastic series.”

5. Roth considered writing parts of Allegiant from Caleb’s and Natalie’s point of view.

At the 2013 National Book Festival, you stated that you almost wrote the book from Caleb’s and someone else’s perspective. Can you tell us who that person was?

VR: I tried out Caleb, I tried out Tobias (obviously that one worked), and I tried out journal entries retrospective from Natalie’s point of view to intersperse with the forward narrative. That couldn’t sustain over the entire book, and it didn’t address the story from the angles that I wanted to address it from, so I had to get rid of that one too.

Was it weird writing from Tobias’ point of view or did you love switching voices?

VR: I thought it was fun because Tris’ voice is very stereotypically masculine, very straightforward, very direct, kind of repetitive. Tobias’ is a little more poetic, a little more descriptive, and he generally shares more. Tris is always withholding, but Tobias shares everything, so it was interesting to see those dynamics and how they turned over my expectations of those people. It was fun, but it was hard.

Who are Veronica Roth’s Favorite Characters in Divergent?

Veronica Roth recently revealed her favorite characters in Divergent and how it changes with each book.  Her answer to who her favorite is after book three really makes me wish it were October already!

Read Veronica Roth's Interview with Lord Voldemort (@Lord_Voldemort7)!

I feel like, when an author likes a character, it might be for different reasons than when a reader likes a character. I sometimes struggle to get all a character’s dimensions on the page (see: book 1, Jeanine), but sometimes I’m surprised by what emerges as I write, and it’s usually in the latter case that I wind up with favorites.

There are a few constants. Tris is always my favorite, because she’s such a complicated girl— at times humorless and merciless and relentlessly hard on herself, at other times brave and compassionate and emotional. I have also loved watching her develop a sense of humor over time. There are so many things I like about her.

When I first started writing Four, he instantly became far more than I thought he would be, with an endless supply of secrets and a history that became more and more complicated as the story went on. I would say more but I’m not going to talk about the third book much— ask me again in October.

Those are sort of lame answers, though, so let’s go with favorite side characters, shall we? They change from book to book.

After book 1, my favorite side character was Tris’s mom.

After book 2, it was Peter. (Or Christina? Or Evelyn?)

And after book 3, it’s Caleb.

(ETA: Also, don’t take that to mean that none of these characters do awful things…because I still end up liking characters even if they do awful things, as long as those awful things come from a complicated place rather than a simplistic one.)

So I’ll just leave you with that.

(How about you?)

As Veronica asks, who are your favorite characters from the trilogy?  Do you find it changes for you also?  Let us know!
