Scheduling Issues Prevent Neil Burger from Directing Insurgent

Today Summit Entertainment announced that due to scheduling issues, director Neil Burger will not be able to direct Divergent sequel, Insurgent.  See below for the official statement.

“Neil Burger is a rock star and he is doing a fantastic job on Divergent.  We can’t wait for you to see the film.  But as amazing as Neil is he still cannot be in two places at once and thus needs to finish post production on Divergent while we gear up to start production on Insurgent.  So, although Neil will continue on as part of our Divergent family as an executive producer, we sadly have to find another director for the next chapter in Veronica Roth’s fantastic series.”

Another thing is there has been some confusion about the realease date because The Summit Entertainment Website said it would be coming out March 14, 2014. It was a mistake and they have now fixed it. The date is still the same March 22, 2014.

Who can not wait till it comes out?

Lucas Till, Jeremy Irvine, Alex Pettyfer in line for Four

According to our very good friends over at Divergent Lexicon, Variety is staking the race for Four to three actors, all of whom come with considerable pedigree: Lucas Till, Jeremy Irvine, and Alex Pettyfer.

As Divergent Lexicon reports:

The hunt for our Four is beginning to narrow down according to reports from Variety. Lucas Till, Alex Pettyfer, and Jeremy Irvine are reportedly in the running to play the coveted role of Tobias “Four” Eaton.

Summit is getting closer to finding its male lead for “Divergent” opposite Shailene Woodley, considered one of the more sought-after roles for a young actor.

Sources tell Variety that Lucas Till, Jeremy Irvine and Alex Pettyfer will test for the role later this week. Summit previously tested Till, Brenton Thwaites, Luke Bracey and Jack Reynor in November.

Veronica Roth’s young-adult novel, acquired by Summit in March 2011, is the first of a planned trilogy. The story has a “Hunger Games”-like teen-on-teen violence in a futuristic setting and follows 16-year-old Beatrice Prior, who Woodley is set to play.

Neil Burger will helm with Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher producing through their Red Wagon banner. Evan Daugherty will pen the script.

Lucas Till is most known for his work in X-Men, in addition to appearing in Taylor Swift’s award-winning “You Belong With Me” video. Jeremy Irvine played the lead character in Stephen Spielberg’s War Horse, and Alex Pettyfer has played several bigtime roles, most notably in Stephen Soderbergh’s Magic Mike.

Summit Looks to Create Divergent Merchandise

When the Divergent movie finally rolls around, it looks like Summit will be taking merchandising into full swing!

Summit Entertainment has filed a trademark for exclusive rights to create various Divergent and Insurgent themed games and merchandise.

Says CinemaBlend:

Trademark filing, made on January 1st, applies to “computer games, namely, computer game cartridges, cassettes, tapes, discs, programs and software” as well as “electronic games downloadable via the internet and mobile devices.” A wide range of other merchandise is also mentioned, including backpacks, sunglasses and mobile phone skins.

Will you be picking up the official Divergent merch when it hits shelves?

Casting calls and auditions for ‘Divergent’ based on Veronica Roth’s novel

The announcement has been made for casting calls and auditions for this latest YA-novel-turned-movie.

From the production company that brought you “The Twilight Saga” films, and the studio that brings you “The Hunger Games” films, comes the first film in a new young adult feature film trilogy, “Divergent”. Auditions are now underway for the starring roles in the film, which will begin shooting March, 2013 in Chicago. “Divergent” is based on author Veronica Roth’s novel of the same name about a teen in a futuristic society who breaks free from her “faction,” attempting to prevent a government coup and dictatorship. The film will be produced and distributed by Lionsgate Studios and Summit Entertainment, who also have purchased the rights to the next two film’s in the trilogy. The film sequel will be titled “Insurgent”.

Right now the only actor confirmed to be in the movie is Shailene Woodley, who’ll be playing the lead role of Beatrice “Tris” Prior. They’re scheduled to start filming in March 2013 in Los Angeles and Chicago. For more information on the casting calls and auditions, please go to Acting Auditions.

Shailene Woodley in talks to play Tris in Divergent Movie

Now that we have a release date (March 21, 2014), a director (Neil Burger), producers (Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher), and a writer (Evan Daugherty) for the movie, it was only a matter of time before they got to the casting part of pre-production.  And according to Variety, Shailene Woodley, known for her role as George’s Clooney’s headstrong oldest daughter Alexandra King in The Descendents as well as Amy Juergens in the TV series The Secret Life of the American Teenager, is up for the role of Tris Prior, our stubborn, selfish, brave lead character.

Shailene Woodley is in final negotiations to star in the Summit’s “Divergent,” an adaptation of 24-year-old author Veronica Roth’s young-adult novel that has drawn close comparisons to Suzanne Collins’ “Hunger Games” series.

Now, I took liberties in saying that she’s up for the role of Tris as Variety actually doesn’t state that, but honestly, there are only a handful of other female characters in the book, and none really deserving of Shailene’s talent.  Besides, when it comes to casting, they usually look for the leads first, right?

With Summit Entertainment’s Twilight series ending this November, it’s not a wonder they want to get started on another successfully YA franchise.  We can only hope that they’ll treat it as Lionsgate has treated The Hunger Games – with utmost respect for the fanbase and the books themselves.  With Shailene, it’s definitely a start in the right direction.

Some of you may think, “But she’s not even blond!”  Well, consider for the moment that hair color can be changed.  Hmm…  wait a minute, it can be changed!  I’ve given you a visual example of Shailene as a blond just to ease your tempered minds.

Does that help?  I hope so, because aside from hair color, I believe she would make an excellent Tris.

Summit is planning to start production in March with the aim of releasing the pic in the first quarter of 2014.

With her show “The Secret Life of an American Teenager” coming to an end, the Paradigm and Principato-Young repped Woodley looks to be ready to make the jump to leading-lady status.

Besides “Divergent,” Woodley is also in talks to star as Mary Jane Watson in Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

Probably the one concern I have about doing both Divergent and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is her being able to film both, as both movies are scheduled for a 2014 release, with Spider-Man scheduled for a May release.  What’s also interesting is that neither character sport her normally caramel-colored hair.

What do you think of Shailene playing Tris?  Sound off in the comments below.
